Via a joint development agreement, Lear Corporation and IMS Connector Systems GmbH are partnering to develop high-speed Ethernet solutions for autonomous vehicle connectivity. The two companies believe Ethernet provides a cost-effective, scalable solution for higher data transmission speed and capacity in connected vehicles.
Ethernet cabling can run alongside or bypass standard cabling. Reportedly, this allows all vehicle components to connect with lighter and more functional wires. The result is lower connectivity costs and cabling weight with significantly higher bandwidth and better performance.
Current vehicles employ an increasing number of sensors and actuators, all of which are transmitting increasing amounts of data. Ethernet is proving viable in supporting these higher data transmissions. It may also be suitable for future technologies including highly autonomous or fully autonomous operating systems and edge computing.
