Sub-GHz Wireless SoCs Extend Range And Battery Life

Silicon Labs is unveiling the Series 2 platform, EFR32FG23 (FG23) and EFR32ZG23 (ZG23), which it claims are the “world’s first secure sub-GHz System-on-Chip (SoCs) devices with a wireless range over one mile and the ability to extend battery life up to 10 years. With flexible, multiprotocol sub-GHz connectivity options, they support a wide range of modulation schemes and wireless technologies including Amazon Sidewalk, mioty, Wireless M-Bus, Z-Wave, and proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The devices also feature certified Arm PSA Level 3 security.

Series 2 Platform Expanded.

The FG23 and ZG23 wireless SoCs specify transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) power levels of (13.2 mA Tx at 10 dBm and 4.2 mA Rx at 920 MHz. They boast best-in-class RF (+20 dBm output power and -125.3 dBm RX at 868 MHz, 2.4 kbps GFSK), making it possible for IoT end nodes to achieve a 1+ mile wireless range while operating on a coin cell battery for 10+ years.

The SoCs also employ Secure Vault, certified PSA Level 3 to safeguard IoT products against software and hardware attacks. Other SoC features include a simplified single ended RF match that promises a 40% lower bill of materials (BoM) than comparable devices, frequency ranges of 110 MHz to 727 MHz and 742 MHz to 970 MHz, support for FSK, GFSK, OQPSK DSSS, MSK, GMSK, and OOK  modulation schemes, and peripheral features for LCDs, push buttons, and low-power sensors

The FG23 targets Amazon Sidewalk, industrial IoT (IIoT), smart city, building, and home automation applications that often require battery-power for end nodes with extended wireless communication range capabilities. The ZG23 enhances Z-Wave Wireless by adding Secure Vault and offers the same RF and power performance as the FG23. Supporting Z-Wave Long Range and Mesh, these are reportedly the first SoCs optimized for both end devices and gateways and can also support all FG23 protocols.

Available now, the FR32 and FG23 SoCs come in 5 mm x 5 mm QFN40 and 6 mm x 6 mm QFN48 packages. For more details and data, peruse the FR32/FG23 overview page.
