Rare 1975 MoI Performances In Eastern Europe Emerge

by Mat Dirjish

Known by fans, band members, musicians, and composers as a highly-disciplined workaholic,

Frank Zappa left behind a beyond-enormous catalog of work that includes films and recordings of live concerts as well as tons of released and unreleased music. On the other side of the concert stage, Frank Zappa fans have a beyond-enormous appetite for any music and films the man created. Well, soon those hungry fans will have more to feast upon.

On October 14, 2022, Zappa Records/UMe will release “Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana,” featuring the best performances of Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention (MoI) Yugoslavian concerts from November 1975. Dubbed the “Mothers of Invention Yugoslavian Extravaganza” by Zappa, the concert took place in Zagreb and Ljubljana, now the capital cities of Croatia and Slovenia respectively, on November 21/22, 1975.

The 1975 MoI lineup includes Andre Lewis (keyboards), Napoleon Murphy Brock (tenor sax and lead vocals), Norma Bell (alto sax, vocals), Roy Estrada (bass), and Terry Bozzio (drums). The October 14, 2022 release, Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana, sequences the concerts in the exact order of the show’s setlist. Produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vault Meister Joe Travers, the 27-track live album is nearly two and half hours long and consists of completely unreleased music. It will be available digitally (26 tracks without disc breaks) or on  two CDs with a 32-page booklet containing photos of the era and lineup.

In addition to capturing Zappa’s sole performances in Yugoslavia, the collection is a significant piece of Zappa history as it captures early versions of songs that fans would come to know later on. It also frames the unique band lineup that would disband shortly after the shows. The tracks on the two-CD version include:
