Fender Turns The Clock Back

by Mat Dirjish

Fender is introducing, or you could say reintroducing, a line of electric guitars and basses faithfully recreated like those the company made in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Called the American Vintage II Series, the line includes the Telecaster, Stratocaster, and Jazzmaster guitars and the Precision Bass and Jazz Bass models.

Built in Corona, CA, the flagship series promises to elevate the playing experience for modern musicians, while maintaining the classic features that inspired players through the decades. Justin Norvell, Executive Vice President of Product, said, “The models in the American Vintage II Series are a near 1:1 comparison with their original predecessors and are built with precise, modern manufacturing processes unavailable in the past.”

Fender’s marketing campaign kicks off with ‘Music Never Dies’, a 60 second film featuring a collage of era specific footage. The film spotlights poet-performer Patti Smith, one of the most influential artists from the ’70s punk rock movement.

Additionally, the company is partnering with country music duo Brothers Osborne, British vocalist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter James Bay, British rock guitarist Jeff Beck, and others. Each campaign artist will appear in a four-part video series that showcases six guitars and basses in the collection. The videos will include personal conversations plus performances of original songs and covers from each American Vintage II decade.

To further promote the series, Fender will host an immersive pop-up near the Austin City Limits Music Festival starting with a VIP event on Thursday, October 13, 2022 and opening to the public on Friday, October 14, 2022. The pop-up will include a performance by Adrian Quesada’s BOLEROS PSICODÉLICOS on the VIP night, a direct-to-vinyl recording booth, and the opportunity to purchase the 1951 Telecaster guitar at the original 1951 price of $229.90.

Key features of the American Vintage II Series include:

  • Vintage-era specs of the `50s, `60s and `70s,
  • Nitrocellulose lacquer finishes
  • Vintage-style neck profiles
  • Year-specific pickups
  • Ash and alder bodies
