Bosch Sensortec is introducing the BMI423, which it describes as a new-generation inertial measurement unit (IMU) that combines extended measurement range with low power consumption. Targeting always-on applications such as wearables, hearables, and robotics, the IMU delivers precise motion data and intelligent on-sensor functionality while maximizing battery life.

Doubling the range of its predecessor, the BMI423 provides measurement ranges of ±32 g (accelerometer) and ±4,000 degrees per second (gyroscope). It integrates voice activity detection (VAD) based on bone-conduction sensing. The sensor detects when a user is speaking and activates the microphone only when required. This conserves energy and protects privacy.

Additionally, on-board functions such as wrist-gesture recognition, multi-tap detection, and step counting allow the main processor to remain in sleep mode until needed. This extends battery life in devices such as smartwatches, earbuds, and fitness bands.
Other features include noise levels of 5.5 mdps /√Hz (gyro) and 90 µg/√Hz (≤ 8 g) or 120 µg/√Hz (≥ 16 g) (accelerometer), a power consumption 25 µA during acceleration, and I3C, I²C, and SPI interfaces. Available now for direct customers in a 2.5 mm x 3 mm x 0.8 mm³ LGA package, the BMI423 will be available through Bosch Sensortec’s distribution partners starting in Q3 2026.
