Smart MDI System Melds Insulin Pen and CGM Into A Mobile App

by Mat Dirjish

Healthcare technology company Medtronic announces the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) commercial launch of its MiniMed Go Smart multiple daily injections (MDI) system with Simplera sensor. The Simplera sensor is a disposable continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for diabetes management that requires no finger-sticks for calibration and features a two-step insertion process. As per the company, the system is the first to integrate data from the InPen, a reusable smart insulin pen that uses Bluetooth technology, and the Simplera sensor into a single mobile app that helps diabetics who require multiple daily injections to better control their condition.

Medtronic begins EMEA commercial launch of MiniMed Go Smart MDI system with Simplera sensor

Accessible through a smartphone app, the MiniMed Go Smart MDI provides real-time, personalized insights, actionable dose alerts, an integral dose calculator, and continuous guidance. Que Dallara, EVP and president of Medtronic Diabetes and CEO-designate of MiniMed, explains, “Real-time actionable alerts are becoming the key to better clinical outcomes for people with diabetes using multiple daily injections. The MiniMed Go™ system remembers, reminds and recommends the right dose at the right time so you don´t have to.”

For healthcare professionals, the MiniMed Go system includes CareLink Clinic MDI reports, that allegedly make it easier for clinicians to interpret user data and support more informed patient discussions. Dr Martín Cuesta Hernández, Endocrinologist, Hospital Clinico San Carlos, Madrid, Spain, reports, “Smart MDI has fundamentally changed how we care for patients on multiple daily injections. We’re now making evidence-based decisions instead of relying on assumptions, which has strengthened trust and improved the quality of our conversations with patients. Many people simply tell us they’re delighted because life is easier. Combined with efficient telemedicine delivery, we’re able to provide more personalized, effective care than ever before.”

In Europe, the MiniMed Go system with Simplera sensor has approval for people with insulin-requiring diabetes aged seven years and older, as well as for children aged two to six years under the supervision of an adult caregiver. Compatibility of the Instinct Go sensor, made by Abbott, with MiniMed Go is currently pending CE mark approval. Once approved, users will have the choice between a seven- or 15-day sensor depending on their needs. For deeper details and insights, visit the Medtronic website.
