Italy-based music tech company Artinoise is launching trillo, a pocket-size digital flute that’s ready to play out of pocket, while also capable of performing as a MIDI controller. Viable for everyone from pro musicians to beginners, trillo measures 22-cm (8.5-in.) long and provides a range of realistic onboard sounds.

In addition to a large library of standard sounds, the instrument has seven slots for premium sound packs, one of which comes with it. More sound packs are available for download for a small fee via trillo’s companion app. Players can also onboard backing tracks in a range of genres that they can produce in the trillo app.

The instrument’s mix of keys, sensors, and outputs expands its possibilities and allows players of all levels to use it anywhere. The interface is reportedly simple and intuitive, and includes multicolored LEDs to guide play. Sensors track breath intensity, movement, and position, creating subtle variations in timbre. Additionally, trillo can connect to MIDI via USB or Bluetooth, and it has an audio output for headphones or speakers.
Though the companion app is not necessary to play trillo, it expands the instrument’s creative functions and educational uses. The trillo app can import and configure MIDI tracks and fingering patterns as part of a built-in instructional path that comes with the app.

Wind players and music enthusiasts can acquire their own trillo via the company’s Kickstarter campaign. And for other details, visit the Artinoise website.
