Absolute Position Sensor Boosts Accuracy, Trims Budgets

Promising to deliver high accuracy and stability while reducing costs, Vishay Intertechnology’s 34 PHE multi-turn absolute position sensor employs non-contacting Hall Effect technology. Residing in a package measuring 7/8 in. (22.2 mm) in diameter, the component specifies a linearity down to ±1% full stroke, resolution of 1°, and a lifespan greater than 10 million cycles.

Offering linear or rotary displacement tracking with a total electrical angle of 3,600° across 10 turns, the 34 PHE is available at a 40 % lower cost than  its previous generation. Other features include IP65 sealing, the ability to withstand high frequency vibrations up to 2 g and shocks up to 50g, and reverse voltage and overvoltage input protections of -14 Vdc and +28 Vdc, respectively. An integrated locating peg on the mounting face promises to simplify installation while preventing rotation.

The 34 PHE reports its position immediately upon power-up without requiring recalibration, re-homing, or initialization routines even after a power loss, thereby eliminating the need for a battery backup. It operates with a supply voltage of 5 Vdc ±10% and a supply current of less than 8.5 mA typical. Recommended load resistance is 1 kΩ for both analog and PWM output.
