Low-Cost Camera System Fosters Mass Adoption Of Hyperspectral Imaging

by Mat Dirjish

With the goal of driving greater adoption of hyperspectral imaging systems (HIS), Hinalea Imaging describes its Hinalea VNIR CORE as a compact, cost-effective imaging system for the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectral range. According to the company, its system’s MEMS-based architecture reduces HSI hardware cost by approximately 70% compared to conventional VNIR hyperspectral systems.

Barry McDonogh, CEO of Hinalea Imaging, explains, “For years, hyperspectral imaging has largely remained the domain of laboratory research, with the cost and complexity of sensors limiting commercial adoption. VNIR CORE is the first in a series of products designed to change that equation. By dramatically reducing hardware cost while retaining the spectral intelligence that makes HSI so powerful, we can bring laboratory-grade chemometrics to industrial inspection and enable hyperspectral imaging that’s deployable at scale.”

The VNIR CORE system covers the 420 nm to 980 nm visible and near-infrared spectral range. Measuring 112 mm x 56 mm x 34 mm and weighing 235 grams, it integrates smoothly into OEM platforms, machine vision systems, industrial inspection equipment, and drone-based imaging platforms.

Other features include a 14-nm FWHM spectral resolution across 40 spectral bands, 1280 x 1024-pixel spatial resolution, USB 3.0 connectivity, and a power consumption of 4.5W. For greater enlightenment, peruse the VNIR CORE overview and specs.
