Compact TFT Chip Resistors Handle High Power Without A Heatsink

Boasting the ability to deliver high power while consuming little space, Vishay Intertechnology’s CHEP series thin film (TFT) chip resistors reside on an aluminum nitride substrate, enabling them to provide high power handling and high frequency performance in standard surface-mount footprints.

As per the company, competing components often offer power ratings below 1W. The CHEP series consists of two resistors: the CHEP0402 in an 0402 size case with a 1.2W power rating and CHEP0603 in an 0603 with a 1.8W rating. Mounting them as per datasheet guidelines, their power ratings increase by 50% to 1.8 W and 2.8 W, respectively.

The components operate across a wide frequency range and are available with flip-chip or wraparound terminals. Flip-chip resistors in 0402 cases achieve frequencies to 50 GHz, while wraparound face-up mounting supports operation to 20 GHz. Resistors in the 0603 case size support frequencies up to 40 GHz.

Other CHEP series features include resistance values from 20Ω to 120Ω with tolerances down to ±1%, a temperature coefficient of ±100 ppm/°C with ±50 ppm/°C available on request, an operating temperature range from -55°C to +155°C, and LC values down to 1 x 10⁻²⁴. Target applications include LEO satellites, base station terminals, 5G and 6G networks, RF infrastructure, aerospace and defense systems, satellite payloads, guidance and telemetry systems, data links, and phased array radar systems.
