DTMS Transforms Optical Fiber Cable Into A Long-Range Temperature Sensor

by Mat Dirjish

Wireless communication systems developer BICOM claims its distributed temperature monitoring system (DTMS) turns an optical fiber cable measuring up to 20 km in length into a temperature sensor. This enables long-range temperature monitoring of substations, power tunnels, and industrial infrastructure.

The optical fiber cable works as the temperature sensor. According to the company, users can monitor an entire line by installing fiber cable along it to continuously monitor temperature over distances up to 20 kilometers. The fiber does not require an external power supply and the DTMS supports on-site monitoring and is compatible with systems such as SCADA.

Applications for DTMS include energy storage systems, electrical substations, bus ducts in buildings and factories, underground power tunnels, power generation facilities, pipelines, plants, and power lines. The system is also viable for water and gas leakage detection. For deeper details, peruse the BICOM DTMS webpage.
